UNM Commencement Set for May 11 at The Pit

Ann Rhoades, direc­tor and co-founder of Jet­Blue, and a nation­ally rec­og­nized speaker, deliv­ers the keynote address at the UNM spring com­mence­ment on Sat­ur­day, May 11, at 9 a.m. at Uni­ver­sity Arena, the Pit. Rhoades is a dynamic and vision­ary Human Resources exec­u­tive with more than 25 years expe­ri­ence in a vari­ety of service-based industries.

About 3,321 stu­dents are pro­jected to receive degrees from UNM’s Albu­querque and Extended Uni­ver­sity cam­puses, as fol­lows: 2,033 bachelor’s degrees, 529 master’s degrees, 74 doc­tor­ates, 90 juris doc­tor­ates, 60 med­ical doc­tor­ates, 86 phar­macy doc­tor­ates, 5 grad­u­ate cer­tifi­cates and 12 edu­ca­tion spe­cial­ists. An offi­cial degree count is deter­mined fol­low­ing commencement.

At UNM-Gallup, 124 asso­ciate degrees and 42 cer­tifi­cates are pro­jected to be awarded; at Los Alamos, 13 asso­ciate degrees; at Taos, 23 asso­ciate degrees and 15 cer­tifi­cates; and at Valen­cia, 200 asso­ciate degrees and 15 cer­tifi­cates. Golden Grad­u­ates, the class of 1963, will also be hon­ored at com­mence­ment for their life­long con­nec­tion to UNM.

Prakash Adhikari receives the Tom L. Pope­joy Dis­ser­ta­tion Prize for research focus­ing on the causes and con­se­quences of civil war, with a par­tic­u­lar focus on forced migra­tion and tran­si­tional jus­tice. He has done exten­sive field­work in Nepal funded by the National Sci­ence Foun­da­tion and has received three com­pet­i­tive awards from UNM Dean’s Dis­ser­ta­tion Fel­low­ship, Regents Grad­u­ate Fel­low­ship, and the Clyde E. and Gar­net Starkey Schol­ar­ship Award for his dis­ser­ta­tion work.

Dale Kempter, Doc­tor of Fine Arts, is the Hon­orary Degree recip­i­ent. Kempter is one of the Southwest’s most dec­o­rated and out­stand­ing music edu­ca­tors and con­duc­tors, work­ing with stu­dents from ele­men­tary and sec­ondary schools all the way up to teach­ing at East­ern New Mex­ico Uni­ver­sity, Uni­ver­sity of New Mex­ico and the Uni­ver­sity of Akron.

UNM Provost and Exec­u­tive Vice Pres­i­dent for Aca­d­e­mic Affairs Chaouki Abdal­lah will give open­ing remarks and con­fer degrees and UNM Regent Con­rad James will greet grad­u­ates on behalf of the UNM board of regents. UNM regents, admin­is­tra­tors, deans and fac­ulty are among the plat­form group. Uni­ver­sity Sec­re­tary Vivian Valen­cia is chief marshal.

The UNM Brass Choir will play music for the ceremony’s pre­lude and pro­ces­sional and Los Reyes de Albu­querque will play the reces­sional. Alexan­dra Mar­tinez, grad­u­at­ing with a Bachelor’s of Music, will sing the national anthem and alma mater. UNM Alumni Asso­ci­a­tion Pres­i­dent Duffy Swan will give clos­ing remarks. Col­lege, branch and depart­men­tal con­vo­ca­tion cer­e­monies are sched­uled May 8–15.
